WEEKEND ITINERARY

Thursday, September 4th - Walker Check-In
4:00 pm - 8:00 pm -- Participants may check-in for the Challenge Walk at the host hotel, San Diego Marriott Del Mar. Meet 'n' greet with friends old and new!
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm -- Nurse's Station open at the Marriott.
Please note: Walkers are financially responsible for their Thursday night hotel accommodations.  Reservations will be made by the chapter.

Friday, September 5th - Day One
Mileage: 20 miles from the Flower Fields in Carlsbad to San Diego Marriott Del Mar  Hotel
Start Line: Flower Fields, 5704 Paseo del Norte, Carlsbad CA

6:30 am -- Busses leave from Marriott to Flower Fields Start Line
7:00 am -- Last Minute Walker check-in at start line
7:30 am -- Opening Ceremony; family & friends are invited to attend
8:00 am -- Challenge Walk begins with rest stops every 1.5 to 3 miles
8:00 am - 5:00 pm -- Walk 20 miles with lunch stop at Swami's in Encinitas
1:00 pm - 5:00 pm -- Lounge with food and drinks, Massages, and Nurses Station open at San Diego Marriott Del Mar
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm -- Banquet dinner & entertainment at host hotel, San Diego Marriott Del Mar

Saturrday, September 6th - Day Two
Mileage: 20 miles from San Diego Marriott Del Mar Hotel to Ventura Cove in Mission Bay
6:00 am -- Breakfast in banquet room
7:30 am -- Warm-up & Stretching
8:00 am - 5:00 pm -- Walk 20 miles with a lunch stop in La Jolla, and rest stops every 1.5-3 miles. Continual shuttle service to transport Walkers from Sunset Point to the hotel
1:00 pm - 5:00 pm -- Lounge with food and drinks, Massages, and Nurses Station open at San Diego Marriott Del Mar
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm -- Banquet dinner, keynote speaker & candlelight ceremony at the San Diego Marriott Del Mar

Sunday, September 7th - Day Three
Mileage: 10 miles from Ventura Cove in Mission Bay to Embarcadero Park South in downtown San Diego
Finish Line: Embarcadero Park South, San Diego CA, on Marina Park Way & Convention Way
Free parking & pay parking lots for friends and family
6:00 am -- Breakfast in banquet room
7:00 am -- Shuttle transportation begins to Sunset Point
7:30 am & 8:00 am -- Staggered start
9:00 am - 11:30 am -- Pre-finish celebration
11:30 am -- All Walkers arrive at pre-finish area
11:45 am -- All Walkers leave for finish line
12:15 pm -- Finish Ceremony, friends and family are invited to attend.

 

WEEKEND ESSENTIALS

Packing

Reminder: Your luggage must weigh less than 40 pounds so our volunteers can safely move it.

Pack some fun clothes for our outfit contests!Clothing
You will want to pack for all weather conditions: hot, windy or rain.

  1. Friday Night Team T-shirt Contest: Friday night teams get a chance to strut their stuff and show off their team t-shirts.  Start designing your team shirt and moves for the catwalk NOW! 
  2. Now that the fun part of clothing is over, keep reading for some other essentials to bring!
  3. 2 pairs of worn-in walking shoes 
  4. 3 sets of t-shirts & shorts 
  5. Waterproof jacket - We know it does not happen much in San Diego, but yes it does rain here!
  6. 3-6 pairs of socks (moisture wicking) 
  7. Comfortable underwear, sports bra or other athletic support 
  8. Long pants/sweatpants 
  9. Sweatshirt or fleece 
  10. Nice, comfortable outfit for the evening events 
  11. Sunglasses 
  12. Hat or visor 
  13. Watch
  14. Swimsuit (the hotel has a hot tub to soak your sore muscles)

Health / First Aid Items

  1. Sunscreen
  2. Lip balm with sunscreen 
  3. Blister Kit: alcohol-free wipes, mole skin, antibacterial ointment
  4. All required prescription medications 
  5. Petroleum jelly or sport lubricant for chaffing (i.e. Body Glide) 
  6. Anti-inflammatory pain medicine (i.e. Advil) 
  7. Antacid 
  8. Toiletries

HydrationAll participants must have valid medical insurance to participate in Challenge Walk MS

  1. Hydration pack or like (i.e. Camelback)
  2. Hip pack with water bottle holder

Policies

Please read our policies for important informationFundraising Deadline
The fundraising deadline is August 20, 2014. To honor our participants' commitments and preserve the Chapter's financial integrity, no one will be permitted to walk who has not raised the minimum pledge prior to the deadline. 

Safety First
We want everyone to have a safe and memorable weekend.  We ask all Walkers follow these safety guidelines:

  1. Obey all traffic laws, law enforcement officers and route guidelines.
  2. Do not wear earphones,use radios or talk on cell phones while on the route. 
  3. No running; this is a walking event. 
  4. Participants may not walk while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. 
  5.  Participants may not remain on the route after the last sweep of the day. 
  6. Participants must use sidewalks when available. 
  7. We reserve the right to remove you from the route and/or event at any time should you violate any of the above safety standards.

Confirmations
Every participant MUST submit their completed confirmation and credit card information to confirm event participation and receive a hotel room reservation. Room assignments will be based on timely submission of confirmation and fundraising status.

Medical Insurance
All participants must have valid medical health insurance to participate in Challenge Walk MS. You will be required to fill out a medical questionnaire, provide your medical health insurance information and sign a medical waiver prior to the event.

Minors
All participants must be 10 years of age or older to participate in the Challenge Walk. Any Walker under 18 years old must be accompanied by a participating adult. No exceptions.

Identification
All participants will be issued Walker credentials at check-in that must be worn during the entire event. The credentials allow you access to route support, rest stops and entry into the banquet room for meals.

No pets are allowed on the Challenge Walk route or at the hotel except registered service animals.  Documentation from a veterinarian is required for a service animal's participation.

Daily Check-In
All participants are required to check in every day at the start line and at all rest stops. If you need to leave the route at anytime, you must notify a member of the MS Chapter staff.

Walk Times
Each day the route will open and close at specified times. Any Walker who has not completed the course by the closing time will be picked up and transported to the finish line or hotel. The route times will be published at the event.

Weather
The Challenge Walk will take place rain or shine. Please be prepared with appropriate clothing.
